ROCKFORD (WREX) — A combination of sunshine and the National Football League's biggest game of the year lead to big sales for some local meat markets.
"Today, we knew it would be really busy," says Mossy Vaughn, 640 Meats apprentice. "And there is only three of us so basically we just freaked out. We just do whatever we can."
From prep work, to cooking and filling orders 640 Meats in Rockford and Prairie Hill Meats in South Beloit spent Super Bowl Sunday on their toes.
"When the sun's out, business is great, you know, and then you got the Super Bowl that adds a little bit to it too," says Peter Lentz, 640 Meats owner. "So yeah, we've got quite a few people coming through the door today."
"For me, it's been just cutting as much meat in the case as possible pretty much," says Caleb Vanravenswaay, Prairie Hill Meats manager. "Trying to keep up with the flow of customers. There's just so many always coming in."
The markets say families were coming in to buy cuts great for grilling and sharing with party guests.
"We weren't even sure what today was gonna be like and it ended up being hundreds of wings already," says Vaughn.
"Butterfly chops, man those things are going out the door butterfly chops," says Vanravenswaay.
They say customers rely on their products simply for the quality only a local shop can provide.
"We pride ourselves on our customer service and the local following, I guess you could say," says Vaughn.
"People like to come to a smaller store, they like the familiarity of it," says Vanravenswaay.
But even on the days the doors aren't on a constant swing and the shops are a bit more quiet, they say they are thankful to all of their shoppers.
"We're always just thankful if someone just keeps coming back," says Vaughn.
Both meat markets have been preparing for the Super Bowl Sunday rush since earlier this past week.
